Get to the Heart of Population Health

Business Intelligence (BI) tools and services are mainly used by Care Organizations to analyze population health and deliver quality and cost efficient care. For example, one BI function includes analytics which are used to identify subpopulations of patients who are generating above normal costs, to identify patient non-compliance, and to identify medical protocols that may be resulting in less effective medical outcomes.

These tools and services require data that is codified in order to determine electronically what has happened and what may happen.  It is important that the information extracted from caregiver systems be in a format that a computer can use to determine what that data represents exactly.  This may be a vital sign, like temperature.  Also, the basis for such information must be known as well. For example, is the temperature recorded in Fahrenheit or Celsius?

It is our opinion that the results of such analytics must be viewed in dashboard style displays that highlight areas of concern.  These dashboards would provide quick visual indications of status, with the ability to drill down from nationwide, statewide or community populations, down through practice populations, to a provider within a practice, and finally down to the individual patient themselves.

Having access to many sources of data from Registries, Care Organizations and the like are crucial to having the most complete and accurate picture of a community's health. Together, we can work towards preventative health on an larger scale.
